On the edge of the High atlas Mountains lays the traditional mud brick city of ait-Benhaddou, part of the UNESCO World Heritage List – the location invokes biblical images, so much so that the city has featured in many films as a replacement for Jerusalem. This Day trip will take you to this wondrous city where Hollywood films such as Lawrence of Arabia, The Mummy and Gladíator films were shot.
The visit to ait Ben Haddous is followed by a drive to ouarzazate – a relatively small town that has been nicknamed as the “ the door to the desert ” due to its position between the atlas Mountains and the Sahara. Here you will visit the Kasbah of Taourirte – the ancient residence of the last Sultan of the atlas; Glaoui. The name Ouarzazate comes from a Berber phrase which translates as “ without noise/without confusion” which highlights its intriguing position.
